1. Updates and Reports
- Mandy reported that she is currently working on registering all clubs, and it looks like around 120 clubs will be registered, with possibly a few more.
- ??? shared that the January and February meetings are filling up quickly. The new computer sign-up system is working very well.
- Fitness Department reported that their classes are mostly sold out, with a waitlist, particularly for the 8:00 AM classes. There is a high demand for personal trainers, and they currently have five trainers on staff.
- committee member shared that the Grandkids Day was a great success, with about 55-60 participants. They recommended using the same format and activity schedule for next year. Activities included ceramics, putting, cornhole, and pickleball. The clubs managed the activities, creating a professional atmosphere, and the marketing efforts were helpful.
- The Activity Fair is scheduled for February 8 from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the ballroom. There are 62 tables available, and sign-ups for the fair will be tomorrow Dec 4th.
2. New Business
- Mike Dunbar from the Tennis Club presented his thoughts on the proposal by SPA to convert two tennis courts at the Mt. View location into pickleball courts. He opposed the proposal, arguing that tennis is a key reason many residents purchase homes in the community. He also pointed out that the posted usage numbers are inaccurate, as they do not account for non-club members who are residents using the courts when available. He explained that the two courts under consideration for conversion (#9 and #10) are in disrepair, cracked, and scheduled for resurfacing in 2025, which accounts for their lower usage compared to other courts. The Tennis Club currently has 433 members. Mike also reminded everyone that Matt had previously stated at the board meeting that the PB proposal would not move forward. He compared the proposal to a hypothetical situation where a group of skateboarders would want to drain the Desert View pool to create a skate park, arguing that it is inappropriate to take away one amenity for the benefit of another.
- A pickleball member suggested adding sound-suppressing blankets on three sides of the courts (the pool, residents, and tennis sides), though it was noted by another member that while this could help with the sound of the ball, it would not address the noise from shouting and cheering.
- Larry suggested that SPA contact HOA1 to explore the possibility of building additional pickleball courts there. He also recommended reaching out to Robson to see if there is a possibility of trading land near the pickleball center for additional courts.
- The committee decided to form a subcommittee of four members—none of whom are active participants in tennis or pickleball—to further investigate the situation and present their findings at the January meeting.
- Shawne mentioned that the final facilities report from McMahan has not yet been received.
Conclusion
The meeting concluded with a decision to continue the investigation into the pickleball courts proposal, with further research to be presented in January. The subcommittee will work to gather more information and ensure all perspectives are considered.
